romney enormously to have that performance in denver. it gave the romney campaign, a republican base just a jolt of energy they all badly needed. it probably did change it somewhat, but what we don't know is whether it's changed it back to where we thought it would be, which is a pretty close race to the end or whether it's really put governor romney in a position to overtake the president. >> is it back to a close race, but the president has these battleground state advantages or did it really throw the map up. that's what we don't know. >> we had a couple of days of gallup debate, it will be interesting to see some of those state polls as they come along. i think those races were all tightening before the debate. >> there was some evidence that everything was moving back. >> which you would expect in a race like this. i think that probably has accelerated that. i would say however that i think that the obama people have made a very strange choice post debate, to some out calling romney a lair, in essence with a sour grapes. i don't think that's going to help them with independents and i

on romney's speech, releasing a new ad, reminding voters of the republican candidate's gaffe-plagued foreign trip over the summer. romney, obama aides say, is no ronald reagan, more like chevy chase. combatting that image, romney met with a group of retired generals after a speech. the romney approach would be both more muscular and bipartisan. >> if you look at harry truman and john kennedy and the use of power by bill clinton in his second term, that is a much different approach than jimmy carter and barack obama. >> reporter: to put his vision into action, romney will have to win first, which explains why he made an impromptu stop at a nearby elementary school. at this stage of the race, the pictures matter almost as much as the policies. romney did mention the obama campaign's trump card on foreign policy, the killing of osama bin laden, but he seemed to give the credit to what he called, quote, military and intelligence professionals. romney will now shift back to the economy with campaign events coming up here in virginia and also in iowa and ohio. wolf? >> jim acosta, thank you. let's

of mitt romney since ron naltd reagan support immigration reform. of course, for many republicans that's called amnesty. romney doesn't support it, not yet. we'll see in all the debates, but we'll see if he changes or not his position. but the conversation changed because with george w. bush, he was for immigration reform with a path to citizenship. immediately after that we got the rejection that would have given two million students the possibility of staying. then it was replicated in alabama and georgia. so instead of discussing the possibility of what to do with 11 million undocumented immigrants, here we have incredibly tough laws on immigrations and the approach changed completely. nowadays we're discussing only dream map probably or defer action by president barack obama when the conversation should have been much, much wider. >> i remember ronald regan was quite positive about immigration. he was quite pro hispanic. he gave amnesty the 3 million. >> yes. republicans were doing great. as you know, reagan used to say that latinos are republicans, they just don't know it. >> well
